- Abstract
This work analyzes the play La pluma y la espada (The Feather and the Sword) (1856) by Luis Mariano de Larra from the anthropological theoretical perspective on the initiation of the hero given by Gennep, Eliade and Campbell within the context of the history of the Spanish theatre. The drama conveys a moral lesson and intends to construct the childhood antecedents of the character Francisco de Quevedo as created by the Romantic theatre. To this aim, Larra invents a conflictive and unsolvable family situation that the young herofaces by resorting first toforce and then to intelligence. In the process, the character reveals great human qualities and gains adulthood through the metaphorical death of childhood.
