Britannia Rules the Atom: The James Bond Phenomenon and Postwar British Nuclear Culture.
- Authors
LAUCHT, CHRISTOPH
- Abstract
The article discusses British nuclear culture as related to the James Bond series of books and films. According to the author, nuclear culture played a significant role in the social construction of Britishness during and after the Cold War. It is suggested that the Bond films and stories reflected British nuclear policy and propaganda depicting Great Britain as a nuclear superpower, particular through its representations of the country's nuclear capacity and of the potential effects of nuclear fallout. Other topics include radiation and delivery systems for nuclear weapons.
