- Title
Silly Love Songs: The Impact of Puccini's La Bohème on the Intertextual Strategies of Moulin Rouge!
- Authors
LARSON, KATHERINE R.
- Abstract
The article discusses the various ways that Giacomo Puccini's opera "La Bohème" plays a pivotal role in the intertextual strategies that are present throughout the musical motion picture "Moulin Rouge!" directed by Baz Luhrmann. How Luhrmann and co-writer Craig Pearce recontextualize a range of characters, themes, and episodes drawn from the Italian opera's narratives, while creating significant parts of the story from gaps in the “La Bohème” narrative is examined. Particular attention is paid to exploring how the musical principles of "La Bohème" serve as the basis for the textural organization in "Moulin Rouge!"
