- Abstract
Contextual valence (and a trend for absolute valence) negatively predicts cosine similarity: the more valenced the adjective-noun pair, the lower the similarity in perceptual profile of the adjectives and nouns. Vision is the dominant modality of English adjectives: vision receives the highest ratings of perceptual strength, more adjectives are classified as vision-dominant, and all adjectives are somewhat visual. In contrast, ratings of sound, taste, and smell are low across adjectives, and few words are taste- or smell-dominant. This is similar to taste and smell, with smell adjectives frequently used with taste nouns (e.g., I smoky sauce i ) and taste adjectives used for smell nouns (e.g., I sweet cologne i ).
