- Abstract
The article discusses the use of vasectomies as a birth control method in Guatemala. The benefits of vasectomies as opposed to female sterilization include cost, a small likelihood of postoperative complications and a quick recovery. The country's medical policy, particularly the free family planning services for both men and women, are discussed. In order to increase the use of vasectomies, the Ministry of Health and the Population Council's Frontiers in Reproductive Health Program (FRONTIERS) that devised a program to introduce training for health personnel in the no-scalpel technique. The article analyzes how couples became aware of the vasectomy option and how they decided whether or not to seek one. The cost of the program to the government is explored.
