- Abstract
To study the combustion characteristics of low aluminum content propellants, the combustion performance and energy performance of low aluminum content(5% mass fraction)HTPB propellants were studied through underwater acoustic emission, BSF Φ 75 and BSF Φ165 standard engine testing methods, and compared with those of HTPB propellants with 12%—18% mass fraction of aluminum powder. The results show that under the same solid content conditions, low aluminum propellant has high burning rate and there is no significant change in pressure index compared to others. The finer the particle size of aluminum powder, the higher the burning rate and pressure index of low aluminum propellants. The combustion of low aluminum propellant is stable within 8—10MPa, verified by the p(pressure)—t(time)curve of the internal trajectory of the BSF Φ 75 standard engine. The BSF Φ 165 standard engine test shows that the test specific impulse of the low aluminum propellant with low burning rate is 2387N·s/kg at 7MPa, with a specific impulse efficiency of 97.3%, and the test specific impulse of low aluminum propellant with high burning rate is 2465N·s/kg, with a specific impulse efficiency of 98.6%. The low aluminum propellants exhibit high combustion efficiency and their energy performance is nearly at the same level as that of the conventional aluminum content propellants with similar burning rate.
