- Abstract
Due to the dynamics of the phenomenon of violent extremism, there is not yet an exhaustive or unified definition of violent extremism, even at the national level. Violent extremism and terrorism today are complex challenges, not limited to borders. Terrorist groups and violent extremist movements appear to be dispersed and the threat becomes more difficult to identify and prevent. In general, violent extremism refers to acts of violence that are justified or associated with extreme religious, social, or political ideologies. There is no single profile that would include all violent radicals or extremists, just as there is no "single" path that leads such individuals to the path to terrorism. Violent extremism is a concept or terminology that has been born in recent years, so we can talk about the era "post 11 September", despite the fact that there have been phenomena of extremism or what is called terrorism before. Violent extremism can be considered the totality of violent or extremist or terrorist activities which directly or indirectly endanger the safety of people and their peace in the name of a certain cause, according to them right or holy. The cause can be politically, religiously, culturally, ethnically, economically, etc. inspired. The fight against intolerance and discrimination should be increased, and mutual respect should be promoted, in the framework of coexistence, harmonious relations between ethnic, religious, linguistic groups, etc., in particular in raising public awareness among young people, by conveying messages of peace, tolerance through education, religious coexistence, etc. The Republic of Northern Macedonia and the Balkan countries are collectively exposed to threats and dangers resulting from radicalism, violent extremism and terrorism, in particular exacerbated by the phenomenon of foreign terrorist fighters. Recently, the global threat requires the Republic of Northern Macedonia to reconsider its relations with its neighbors, the international community, as well as with the country's actors, when it comes to preventing violent extremism and terrorism.
