- Abstract
Tartarugas beach in Rio das Ostras County, located in northeastern Rio de Janeiro State, Brazilian southeast coast, presents an accelerated urbanization. Over the last two decades it has passed through an intense and accelerated erosion process. Most of the shoreline is in an advanced stage of environmental degradation. The construction of the bicycle path and of Amaral Peixoto highway extension in the backshore zone has led to the breakdown of sedimentary balance and the consequent erosion of the coastline. Furthermore, the construction of the Juturnaiba dam in the middle course of the São João River, which retained sediments upstream, altered the sedimentary balance of the beaches located near the mouth of the river. This paper is a qualitative study of the erosion process of the Tartarugas beach taking into account sedimentary, hydrodynamic and morphological aspects. The methodology consisted of comparing aerial photographs for the period from 1975 to 2003. The line of permanent vegetation in the coastal plain and man-made structures were adopted as the upper limit of the beach polygon and the waterline as the lower limit. 24 beach profiles on different dates were obtained with the aid of a geodesy GPS Tracker Pro-Mark 2. Samples of sediment were collected in sections corresponding to the beach profiles. The results obtained suggest an erosive trend with the retreat of the coastline by 40 m during the period of 28 years, which corresponds to an estimated value in 1.4 m/year. The transversal sediment transport rate induced by waves, currents and tides was estimated at 1.300 m³/year, being considered significant. In view of the ongoing process of erosion, this work offers a methodological strategy aimed at conducting interventions in the study area, directly and indirectly, through the use of geotechnology applied to studies of coastal erosion.
