- Abstract
This study shows strategies used in love letters written between 1912 and 1920. Complaints (mostly female) are common in the corpus, and they are often used as strategies of seduction. Even though considered offenses in polite discourse, complaints are not felt as such in love discourse, since these strategies intend to achieve the desired objective, which is the consolidation of the couple. The study concludes that complaints are not considered conflictive in love discourse since they are interpreted as a game to be played. The complaining lover is a passionate subject, not a polite one.
