- Abstract
Among the challenges facing the school is the training of individuals capable of facing complex future societies. Hence, research-based teaching is put into practice, in order to problematize the contents of the curriculum and lead students to develop capacities and skills in their quest to solve them. This article aims to understand the development of research-based teaching through transversal curricula to strengthen problem solving and critical thinking in public educational institutions in Medellín-Colombia. The methodology is based on qualitative study with multiple case study method, through: theoretical review and institutional documents, semi-structured interviews, questionnaires, focus groups, class observation and institutional samples. The results reveal that institutions are working on the design of strategies to promote a research culture and develop scientific competencies in students. Among the most relevant strategies is the creation of school research centers, which promote learning by discovery, exposition, explanation and contrast of models, based on problems and by projects. For this purpose, more teachers prepared in research processes are required to give continuity to them.
