- Abstract
This article focuses on animals that participated in the Ottoman war effort on the front lines and in the rear areas during the First World War (1914-1918). Animals, partially and indirectly mentioned in the Ottoman Military literature, have not drawn much scholarly interest, although they played important roles in the logistics, communications and combat areas of the Ottoman war effort. On the other hand, new studies that focus on the roles of animals under military mobilization and war conditions in other contexts have been published in recent years, and monuments have been erected to commemorate the success and value of animals in wartime. This study draws attention to the presence and contributions of animals during wars of global scale on the one hand and refers to their undeniable presence in Ottoman military mobilization from the early modern period onward on the other. The article discusses the presence of animals in the Ottoman army within the scope of the First World War, and conveys the dimensions of animal mobilization for war, as well as the living conditions of animals on the front lines. It also presents various examples of agency and subjectivity on the part of the combatant animals.
