- Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of a community service program (campus gardening) in reducing self-reports of ethnocentrism among community college participants. Ethnocentrism was defined as a belief in the superiority of one's own ethnicity over other ethnic groups. We hypothesized that students (n = 40) participating in a community service gardening program would have reduced ethnocentrism and their perceptions of the importance of community service work would significantly increase. Ten participants served as mentors in the project over several months and were administered pre- and post-tests assessing levels of ethnocentrism. An independent samples t-test determined that community service work significantly reduced levels of ethnocentrism. Ramifications of the study and suggestions for future research are offered.
