- Abstract
Sexuality refers to the total sexual makeup of an individual covering the physical aspects, attitudes, values, experiences and preferences. Youths practice a wide variety of sexual behavior. The unconstructive attitude towards sex and unprotected sexual behavior among youths can have severe consequences where both sexes are vulnerable. A total number of 300 youths (males and females) in the age group of 18 - 22 years were selected from Mysore taluk to study the sexual attitudes under five factors of sexuality namely premarital sex, polygamy, pornography, lesbianism and homosexuality. The sexual attitude scale was used to assess the sexual attitudes among youths. The findings revealed that the attitude of the youths towards pornography is higher and they expressed significantly different attitudes towards the five factors of sexuality. Males and females showed significantly different attitudes towards polygamy. The attitude scores of the slum youths are higher when compared to urban and rural youth in all the five factors of sexuality. The males of urban, rural and slum areas showed a highly significant different attitudes towards homosexuality and females of urban, rural and slum areas showed a highly significant different attitude towards the four factors namely premarital sex, polygamy, lesbianism and homosexuality. It is observed that slum females showed a higher score when compared to urban and rural females in all the five factors of sexuality. The differences in attitudes among youths from different background/areas generate fresh health issues. The youths who feel incomplete, inadequate and unappreciated may try to seek comfort in a sexual relationship. Parents, families and teachers need to play a vital role in shaping the lives of youth in avoiding them going to unwise sexual decisions and should learn the effective ways of supporting the youth's psychosexual development.
