- Abstract
Vitamin D deficiency presents with not only general health problems such as deformities in weight bearing bones, muscle weakness, hypoplasia of tooth, failure to thrive but also can cause serious complications such as hypocalcemic convulsions. tetany and laryngospasm. The patient has applied to our hospital for generalized tonoclonic convulsions. The patient had not received vitamin D supplementation and adequate nutritional intake of calcium and phosphorus after the birth. The diagnosis of nutritional vitamin D deficiency was based on the combination of history of poor vitamin D intake, clinical manifestations and typical laboratory findings such as hypocalcemia, hypophosphatemia, hyperparathyroidism and low level of 25 hydroxyvitamin D. Our case is an example of serious complications of nutritional rickets as a current public health problem despite vitamin D supplementation is widespread in our country.
