- Abstract
In 1958, Mao Zedong promoted the campaign of the Great Leap Forward and implemented a series of measures that were designed to attain a rapid economic growth. To reach these goals, the communes were enhanced, domestic private properties were confiscated and production quotas were established. This campaign provoked a massive famine throughout the country, especially in rural areas. In this paper the living conditions of people affected by the Great Famine are examined through the work of Mo Yan, Nobel Prize for Literature 2012.
