- Abstract
This paper provides results of a research study that interpreted the efforts in six states to prepare teachers to teach elementary students about managing personal finances. It begins with an explanation of various efforts to define financial literacy, the importance of its definition, and its relevance to the future of teacher education. It provides an overview of efforts to measure the financial literacy of children and youth and efforts to instill in teachers the content knowledge and methods to improve its teaching and learning. Findings suggest the need to improve the preparedness of elementary teacher candidates to deal with the national crisis in financial illiteracy and the efforts of teacher education preparation institutions in this regard.
