- Abstract
Background: Shame is a powerful experience of fear to judge anyone incomplete and be a stressful experience. Objectives: The aims of this study were to translate the Experience of Shame Scale (ESS) and to evaluate the psychometric properties. Methods: In Phase 1, the ESS was translated into Greek using the translation/backtranslation technique and was reviewed by an expert panel for cultural equivalence. In Phase 2, the questionnaire was administered to 101 males (age M= 43.01, SD=13.34, range = 18 - 68 years) and 159 females (age M = 40.80, SD=11.98, range = 18 - 68 years) representing all stages of the life cycle from 20 different regions of Greece across with a measure of socioeconomic characteristics and the Test of Self-Conscious Affect -- 3 (TOSCA-3). Results: The ESS showed good internal consistency (Cronbach's α = .93) and test-retest reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient = .98). On a subscale level the correlation was: Characterological Shame r =.97, Behavioural Shame r =.98 and Bodily Shame r =.98. Discussion: The ESS has satisfactory psychometric properties and has the potential to be used as a clinical and research instrument for measuring of internal shame in Greek people. The Greek version retains the three factor structure as proposed by the initial authors.
