The article discusses the eating of foods and the cultural and social significance it connotes, as illustrated by the author in discussions of 18th-century British fiction. The author elucidates then-popular ideas about foods in several texts, written parallels between food consumption and literary consumption, and written discussions of food consumption that instilled patriotism among young British readers.
