The article discusses commentary delivered at the board breakfast of the Human Resource Planning Society, held April 13, 2008 in Huntington Beach, California. Professor Edward Lawler of the University of Southern California challenged the audience with several thought-provoking assertions. Lawler noted that few firms live up to the notion that employees are their most important assets. Other topics addressed by Lawler include the role of corporate boards in making talent central to a company’s strategy, and performance management.
