- Abstract
Based on long-term expedition and stationary observations in the taiga in northwestern Russia (1965–2017), the reproduction of the common shrew was studied, including the features associated with its life at the northern range boundary: the timing, reproductive cycles, course and intensity of reproduction, participation of individual age groups in breeding, variations in brood numbers, etc. According to the data obtained, under those conditions, overwintered individuals of this species mainly breed from late April to mid-September, bringing in two or, rarely, three litters of 3–11, with a mean of 6.4 young animals.
