- Abstract
Efforts and endeavours towards using Turkish as the language of literature in Azerbaijan were arduous and painful as in Turkey. Populist approaches starting with Molla Penah Vagıf in the 17th c. and particularly the efforts of Ahundov, Zerdabi and Şirvani in the second half of the 19th c. afforded a more organised and systematic quality for Azeri literature, which was under the Arabian and Persian influence for many years. However it was not until the beginning of the 20th c. that we see an emphasis on the concept of mother tongue in Azerbaijan more extensively than before. Apparently the role and contribution of "Maarifçiler", who were quick to work hard by taking advantage of the liberal atmosphere induced by the 1905 Manifest, was important. The period witnesses a debate between "public language" supported by Molla Nasreddin group and "Istanbul Türkçesi" supported by writers of Füyuzat as to what the language of literature should be. Such discussions and works contributed to the elimination of foreign elements in Azerbaijani Turkish.
