The article discusses close reading practices and the effects of quantitative analysis and mass print culture on literary study in the 19th century. Particular focus is given to the book "Robinson Crusoe" by Daniel Defoe, organicism in the literary analysis of poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson's writings on books. Other topics include the digital humanities and information management.
