- Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of physical activity on psychological resilience factors and compare the physical performance between groups of individuals stratified with levels of moderate and high resilience. To this end, 230 elderly women were divided into two groups: active (n=115, 65.8±5.8 years), consisting of elderly enrolled in a physical activity program geared for seniors with practice period greater than two years, and sedentary (n=115, 69.2±7.2 years). Then underwent assessment of the level of psychological resilience and physical fitness (resistance exercise for upper and lower limbs, flexibility and aerobic endurance). The active elderly had significantly (p=0.001) greater values of the factor 3 of psychological resilience when compared those of sedentary elderly group, which is related to the confidence and ability to adapt to different situations. There were no significant differences (p>0.05) between groups for the other factors (1 and 2). When compared the physical fitness tests between levels of psychological resilience stratified as moderate (n=28) and high (n=202), we found that elderly women with higher levels of psychological resilience showed greater flexibility (p=0.004). However, there were no significant differences (p>0.05) for other neuromuscular variables. In conclusion, considering the findings of this study suggest the use of physical activity as a method of intervention for improving mental health and therefore the psychological resilience in this population, since the results indicate that physically active elderly women have higher scores of psychological resilience as those stratified as sedentary.
