- Authors
Berliner, Robert W.; Berliner, R W
- Abstract
The article presents the author's views on nephrologist Homer W. Smith's contributions to renal physiology. For two decades, clearance methods were the most commonly used tools for understanding the functions of kidney. However, it was Smith who recognized the full potential of these methods for evaluating different aspects of kidney function. Smith also devised new methods for the assessment of glomerular filtration and the reabsorption and secretion of various substances.
