- Title
Travel Writing in The English Woman's Journal (1858-1864): An Area of Leisure in the Context of Women's Work.
- Authors
Korte, Barbara
- Abstract
The article examines the contribution of The English Woman's Journal on female travel as a leisure activity. Topics discussed include a background on the debate about the need to find work for single bourgeois women during the 1850s and '60s, and the reluctance of magazines to identify travel as one of those leisure activities that middle-class women can pursue. It notes that travel articles in The English Woman's Journal showed the complications between female domesticity and transgression.
