- Title
NONE OF THEIR BUSINESS: THE NEED FOR ANOTHER ALTERNATIVE TO NEW YORK'S BAIL BOND BUSINESS.
- Authors
Clisura, Andrea
- Abstract
The article suggests an alternative to the bail bond business in New York City. It explores efforts to address the inequities of the pretrial system and the importance of the system to accused individuals. A discussion of Vera Institute of Justice bail bond agencies, which offer assistance to a high-risk portion of the pretrial population, is presented. The necessity for careful structuring and a stricter client selection process to address concern over the criteria employed by the Bronx Freedom Fund is emphasized. The relationship of the Freedom Fund with the Bronx Defenders is credited for the cost-effectiveness and feasibility of its effort to address the failure of the money bail system to serve indigent individuals.
