- Authors
CABAÑAS, MIGUEL A.
- Abstract
The article discusses the corrido, a popular music genre from Mexico, and the popularization of its musical and filmic use in "narcocorridos," which depict the life experience of drug-traffickers in the U.S.-Mexico border regions. It discusses the genre's ambiguous association with drug-traffic culture and criminality, comments on its symbolic links to marginality and transnational border cultures, and explores its popularization and censure in the U.S., Mexico and beyond. The author also reflects on the intermingling of global cultural images of illegality, drug-traffickers and immigrants.
