- Abstract
The article deals with the issues of risk and risk perception. Risk perceptions are culturally constructed, shaped and mediated through social processes. Cultural theory as elaborated by M. Douglas, U. Beck's theory of risk society and M. Foucault's theory of governmentality disclose the influence of the sociocultural factors upon the construction of risk perception. These theoretical approaches provide relevant conceptual basis for sociological exploration of reflexive modernity and social shaping of public risk perceptions. They are also attempted to be used for uncovering the public discourse over GMOs. The paper looks at the ways in which sociocultural context, worldviews, social expectations and norms shape the public perceptions and public discourse regarding GMOs.
