The article examines the structure of the ICD-10 codes and the rules for using them. Coding sequelae and types of exclusions in ICD-10 are described. Code construction in ICD-10, ranging from three characters to seven, is explained together with the use of the placeholder character "X." Practitioners are advised to examine if current documentation is sufficient and if coding resources will support complete ICD-10 code selection.
