- Abstract
This document is a response to a letter to the editor regarding the use of mean platelet volume (MPV) as a marker of mortality in patients with severe trauma. The authors of the response acknowledge the comments made in the letter and discuss the existing literature on MPV. They highlight the lack of standardization in MPV measurements and the limited studies conducted in the pediatric age group. The authors also mention more recent studies that suggest a negative effect of high MPV/platelet count ratio on postoperative outcome and survival in coronary artery bypass grafting and no association between MPV and mortality in traumatic brain injury. In their own study, the authors found a high MPV/platelet count at a specific time point in the severe trauma group, which they attributed to systemic inflammatory response syndrome and traumatic coagulopathy. They acknowledge the limitations of their study and agree that MPV measurement requires further nuances and the establishment of laboratory-specific ranges. They hope that their study will contribute to clarifying this situation in the literature.
