- Abstract
Edward L. Ayers in the book Southern Journey: The Migrations of the American South 1790-2020 explores how the "migrations of the South weave throughout American history, with indigenous, enslaved, citizen, and immigrant people moving among one another" (ix). The book contains an extraordinary collection of 81 in-color maps that were created using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) that tell compelling visual stories of the devastating spread of the boll weevil that decimated Southern cotton production as well as the decadal changes in White and Black populations across the region. Ayers provides the reader with a digestible, convincing, and expansive history of Southern migration from 1790 to 2020 that powerfully demonstrates "the movement of people beat as the very pulse of southern history" (x).
