- Abstract
TMJD is a relatively common presentation with ear pain, but Eagle's Syndrome and NIM are rare diagnoses at any level of clinical care, suggesting that the results of this meta-analysis should have been more closely applied to daily practice. Dear Editor, A recent article by Ally et al., Aetiology and management options for secondary referred otalgia: a systematic review and meta-analyses in European Archives of Otorhinolaryngology-Rhino-Laryngology 2023 https://doi.org/10.1007/s00405-022-07638-7, reported that Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMJD), Eagle's Syndrome and Nervus Intermedius Neuralgia (NIM) were found to be the most commonly described conditions when focussing on non-malignant causes of secondary otalgia. Eustachian tube dysfunction was not considered a source of referred pain and there were no cases of Eagle's Syndrome, NIM, Fibromyalgia or neuralgias identified in the cohort.
