- Abstract
The information obtained as a result of the experiences takes its place in the memory and becomes involved in life as time comes. Memory is the result of interactions not only with the self, but with living and inanimate beings outside the self. This interaction brings together cultural structures such as values, beliefs, which are the returns of collective and shared life. The functionality of memory arises not only in recording the past, but also in shaping the present and the future. Objectiveization of memory, its protection, keeping it alive and transferring it to others thus ensures the existence of the existence. Memory turns into codes and indicators, and gains objectivity in different ways. We often see traces of memory in art, one of these ways. Towards the end of the 20th century, we often see works of art, especially about cultural memory. What prepares the ground for this is the rejection of modernism and the disappearance of memory due to the violence, wars and genocides. As a result, galleries or spaces outside the gallery have turned into areas where memory of different cultures is re-experienced. The aim of this study is to examine the works of Doris Salcedo in the context of cultural memory and art. In this context, the concepts of culture and memory and the relationship between them are discussed, and finally, examples from Salcedo's work are examined. In the artist's works, memory is re-experienced by presenting the events in Colombia and its versatile effect to the audience with memory, metaphors and metonyms.
