- Abstract
This article presents a study on estimating tidal lung volumes (VT) in adult gray whales using audio and video recordings. The researchers used unmanned aerial systems (UAS) to monitor foraging whales in coastal waters and compared their findings to previous studies conducted in a winter breeding/calving lagoon. The results indicate that tidal lung volume can be estimated based on body length and exhalation duration. This method provides a new tool for understanding the metabolic rate and resource requirements of gray whales, as well as the impact of changing oceanographic conditions on their prey availability.
