- Abstract
The article presents the possibilities and limitations in the effective use of vegetation as a tool in the fight against high surface temperatures on elevations, especially during sunny days. This work describes and classifies various factors that influence the effectiveness of the use of greenery as a passive tool in the sun protection of a building. The study indicated the large possibilities of using plants in reducing the surface temperature of the building envelope resulting mainly from the diverse and wide selection of both plants and the way they are shaped and introduced into the urban space. The analysis also revealed some limitations that may result from the chosen plant and architectural systems, selected forms or species of plants and climatic and microclimatic factors of a given location. Despite various limitations, a wide range of greenery possibilities combined with measurable effects of plant's influence on the surface temperature of the façade encourage to reach for these kind of solutions.
