LEADERS IN MARKETING: Ben W. Heineman.

- Abstract
The article presents information on Ben W. Heineman, one of the leaders in marketing. Ben Heineman was not a "marketing man" as the term is commonly used. He was a corporation lawyer turned into a railroad executive. Heineman was born in Wausau, Wisconsin in 1914. He attended the University of Michigan for three years, then transferred to Northwestern University where he took his LLB degree in 1936. Heineman's market orientation showed in many places. While convincing the Wisconsin Public Service Commission to give permission for the discontinuance of 21 trains, he offered to buy new equipment for remaining trains. Passenger train miles dropped from 8.6 million in 1955 to the one million level by 1966. Ben Heineman had received a great deal of public attention for his efforts to improve the lot of the Chicago-bound commuter. The guiding principle here was that railroads should be concerned with moving people not equipment. Ben Heineman had truly earned his reputation as an industry leader. After more than a decade as head of a major railroad, he was convinced that railroading is once again a growth industry.
