- Authors
Peña, Aleix Romero
- Abstract
The article examines the utility of two sources, those of José María Blanco White, and Henry Richard Vassal Fox, also known as Lord Holland, to characterize a royal minister named Mariano Luis de Urquijo during nineteenth century Spain. Urquijo, a former diplomat, functioned as Secretary of State to King Charles IV during a tumultuous time that included the French Revolution, and was considered to be an historically important figure about whom relatively little has been documented. The author concludes that the specified sources, while at times biased and reliant on caricatures, reveal much not only about Urquijio himself but also of the decadence and moral corruption that characterized the reign of Charles IV.
