- Abstract
The article examines the manner in which George MacDonald uses allegory in his fantasy novels "Phastates," "Lilith" and "The Golden Key" and describes his role in the 19th century aesthetic movement. It suggests that MacDonald's main goal is to help his readers develop individual psyche up to and after death. An overview of the allegorical works of other Victorian authors is also presented.
