BUILDING THE MEXICAN STATE: THE NOTION OF CITIZENSHIP.
Abstract
An interview with anthropologist Claudio Lomnitz and historian Pablo Piccato, both professors at Columbia University, is presented. Piccato presented his views on the idea of nation-building and discourse of nationalities in Mexico based on anthropological analysis. Lomnitz discusses the interaction of the social, cultural and political domains in the public sphere leading to the creation of modern citizenship. Piccato describes the role of Mexico in Latin America.
