- Abstract
The article focuses on the writings Brazilian Jesuit Marcello Azevedo to understand the process of inculturation and evangelization in the Catholic Church. It provides an overview of the history of doctrine and practice towards missions of the Catholic Church from the early church to the Second Vatican Council. Other topics considered include responses to modernity by the Church, ethnocentrism and transculturation in the Church, and the theories of culture and religion forwarded by American anthropologist Clifford Geertz.
