- Abstract
The article looks into the history and future of punctuation marks including its oratorical and grammatical functions. Information is provided about the emergence of inventive punctuation such as the exclamation mark, the creation of the hybrid semicolon by Venetian printer Aldus Manutius, printing press standardization of marks of punctuation, connection of punctuation to speech and its use by writers by the 20th century as a representation of thoughts, and the invention of the interrobang.
