- Abstract
The article discusses female Medieval Islamic scholars and political leaders. It considers women in the epic poem "The Loves of Leili and Majnun" by Jamal al-Din Nizami. The Balkh, governor, in what is now Afghanistan, Davud, who was appointed in 848 and his wife ruled the region while he oversaw the design and construction of the palace he called Nawshad (New Joy). Also discussed is the ninth-century scholar called Fatima and nicknamed Umm Ali, a member of the elite of Afghanistan’s Balkh, who married mystic Ahmad Khidrawayh.
