- Abstract
The article presents an examination into the life and career of the 19th-century British medical photographer Hugh Welch Diamond, whose work documenting the mentally ill greatly affected popular and scientific views of insanity. Details are given overviewing Diamond's medical education and adult career as an asylum keeper in London, England. Commentary is given describing trends in the diagnosing and sequestering of the mentally ill during the century, noting abuses of the system. Diamond's contributions to the scholarship of mental illness and his extensive photography collection are then addressed, highlighting how his humane portrayal of the patients contributed to their better treatment.
