- Abstract
The Argentine Yungas is one of the most diverse ecoregions suffering greater anthropic disturbance, 66% of bat species of Argentina are represented in this area. In the southern Yungas is the Escaba community, where the Escaba Dam is located, it houses one of the largest breeding colonies of a migratory species, Tadarida brasiliensis (Molossidae), in a human construction. The objectives of this research were to determine the diversity of the area, study the colony housed in the dam, and teach the Escaba community about the importance of bat conservation. In order to reach these objectives, surveys in and around the dam were carried out since 1992, as well as activities with the Escaba community. As a consequence of the researches carried out a few years ago, the Escaba Dam was declared as a Site of Importance for Bat Conservation (SICOM, for its acronym in Spanish), due to the importance of conserving the colony and its refuge, the area of influence was recently declared as an Area of Importance for Bat Conservation (AICOM, for its acronym in Spanish) for protecting species of importance for conservation and high diversity in this part of the Yungas.
