- Abstract
This article presents the Coastal Award of the American Society of Civil Engineers awarded to oceanographer Paul Komar at the Coastal Sediments Conference 2003 in St. Petersburg, Florida. The award is presented to an individual in recognition of having sustained achievement spanning two decades with contributions to both coastal science and engineering. Komar's achievements includes pioneering research in longshore sediment transport on beaches, the computer simulation of shoreline change, the initiation of sediment motion by waves and currents, and the formation of heavy-mineral placers on beaches. Komar is an emeritus professor of oceanography at Oregon State University.
