- Abstract
The canonical structure of western literature, particularly the classical western novel, has reached a breaking point since the second half of the XXth century and sub-genres highlighting inter-genres transition, and in which novel codes are intertwined and sometimes destroyed has occurred. Bringing a different perspective to modern French novel by exemplifying of these newly formed hybrid genres, Jean Echenoz gives the narrative dynamism by changing the novel conventions. Echenoz, who is seen as significantly loyal to the traditional novel features, re-interprets the basic concepts of the narrative and creates a more cinematographic narrative structure. In the novels One year (Un an) and I'm gone (Je m'en vais), static, settled and detailed descriptions of space in the classic French novel are replaced by a narrative in which the space is dynamic, continuously changing and evoking rootlessness. The constant travel of the novel characters creates spatial mobility; on the other hand, it weakens heroes' sense of belonging. In this study, dynamic space and dynamic character relations, emptiness, uncertainty, impossibility of taking root and non-spatiality which do not allow any connection will be examined in the light of fiction theories and non-place (non-lieu) model.
