- Abstract
The article presents an examination into the sponsorship of large-scale amateur athletic tournaments by the Mormon Church in the 1950s and 1960s throughout the U.S. An historical overview of the culture of sports in the mid 20th century is given, highlighting the Mormon Church's official approval of young men's recreational activities in connection to growing and fostering church community. The religious sociological theories of Thomas O'Dea are heavily cited. Examination is given both to the successful social aspects of the two decades of sports as well as the inner-conflicts it produced.
