- Abstract
Primary school foreign language learning programs have been confronted with a lot of criticism lately. Especially teachers from secondary schools complain about the huge heterogeneity of competencies that pupils bring into their classrooms when changing from primary to secondary school, which obviously drives them to start all over again. Due to this practice, some politicians, educational specialists and journalists frequently discuss whether foreign language learning should be a matter of primary education at all or whether it should be left to the secondary schools. This article wants to show that such a decision would neither be acceptable nor recommendable. It will first take a glance at different research studies, showing that foreign language instruction in primary schools has a positive effect on young learners in various dimensions. It will furthermore argue that, with regard to our growing multilingual, multicultural and mobile society, the learning of foreign languages has become a very important part of education that should start as early as possible. However, this contribution will also depict that it is time for a change with regard to the concept, the standards and the reputation of early foreign language learning in Germany.
