- Title
Veterinary Ireland visits UL to hear VETERINARY degree programme proposals.
- Abstract
Veterinary Ireland visited the University of Limerick (UL) to hear proposals for a new veterinary degree program. The presentations emphasized the need for a second veterinary school in Ireland to support animal health and welfare, biosecurity, and the agri-food industry. UL aims to establish a world-leading veterinary school with a focus on biosecurity, production animals, and equines. The university plans to collaborate with the wider animal health and welfare community and integrate graduate knowledge and skills into its program. UL envisions an additional 450 students and 65 to 75 new staff members once the school is established. The university also intends to promote veterinary engineering as a discipline through collaboration with its Biomedical Engineering and Lero Software Engineering Departments. UL aims to deliver an internationally-accredited undergraduate degree program in veterinary medicine, with a curriculum developed in association with an International Academic Advisory Group. The program will have a hybrid distributed model of veterinary clinical education, with a network of veterinary practices, regional placement hubs, and a teaching hospital in Limerick. UL's plans were well-received by Veterinary Ireland, and the delegation wishes the university success in its application.
