Xhorxh, xhuxhrnaxhuxh and the xhaxhallarë: The Xenophbnemic Status of Albanian /xh.
- Authors
Curtis, Matthew C.
- Abstract
The article discusses the Albanian alveolopalatal affricate /xh/, which the author calls a xenopheme, and focuses on its association with foreign names and concepts. The author compares /xh/ to the voiced palatal stop /gh/, used for native Albanian concepts, and explores the development of the two phonemes. Metalanguage, paralanguage, microlanguage, and prelanguage functions are explored. The author examines borrowings from Turkish language and comments on the use of /xh/ in song lyrics, exclamatory sentences, and common and proper names.
